Costa Rica Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Head to http://bit.ly/LeeTropEco2021 to apply!
In May 2021 we will head to Costa RIca for 22 days of exploring tropical ecology and conservation. We will focus on 4 forest ecosystems from the seasonal dry forests of the Pacific coast to the mangrove forest of the Caribbean coast. In between we'll spend time in cloud forest and lowland moist forest and many connected biomes. We'll go hiking, spelunking, boating and go from sea level to cloud forests to explore the biodiversity of the Neotropics first hand. At each location, with an itinerary designed to maximize time in the field and minimize travel time, we will look at the unique ecological communities and how humans benefit from them and affect them. We will compare different forms of agriculture. We'll look at projects underway to conserve biodiversity and maintain or restore ecosystem function, while also considering issues of justice that affect people living in these ecosystems.

Where will we go?This map shows many of the places we will visit, and you can see the four main areas we will explore. We'll start with five days in the area around La Fortuna, then head northwest to spend four days in the dry coastal forest and explore the coast and coastal mountains around Santa Rosa National Park. Then we head back southeast to explore the forests, rivers, and wetlands north of San Jose for five days, then way southeast to the Caribbean coast in the areas around Puerto Viejo de Telamanca for five days, then back to the hills outside San Jose to wrap up for a couple days before flying back to the USA.

Also, the photos on this page are not my own, unlike the rest on this website. I hope to change that after this trip! They are all of areas we plan to visit or of creatures that live in the areas we'll be exploring--including the beach below at Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.
